International Association of Online Communicators

Mission Statement

The International Association of Online Communicators (IAOC) is dedicated to promoting and preserving the open and free communication that has been the foundation of the Internet community. Its purpose is to provide a network through which practitioners and educators can share knowledge and ideas. The Association is a place where Internet content creators and publicists can join together to define and advance their roles in this emerging professional arena. Membership is open to all those whose work or teaching is centered on Internet content creation, including writers, editors, producers, college professors and online publicists.

Objectives

The Association seeks to fill a number of as-yet unmet urgent needs:

  • Support and encourage research into Internet communications.
  • Provide a scholarly journal for those doing original research in Internet communications.
  • Publish, in print and electronic media, books, magazines and newsletters, for members and the general public, that inform, educate and persuade on ideas, techniques and issues that touch on Internet communication.
  • Develop quality standards and a code of ethics for the profession.
  • Promote self-policing of the industry and provide visibility for the profession in relation to governments, regulators, educational institutions, the news media and the public.
  • Assist educators in developing Internet communications curricula and in getting courses accredited.
  • Publish an annual Internet Style Guide that provides authoritative guidance on word usage, graphic and technical standards, ethical standards and regulatory issues. The guide is to be available in print and online for practitioners producing content for the World Wide Web and/or e-mail. A creation of its founding members, income from the Guide helps support the Association’s educational mission
